Washington, D.C., July 29, 2024 – BABL AI, along with more than 45 prominent organizations, companies, and universities, has signed a letter to key congressional committee leaders, urging them to prioritize the establishment of the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (AISI) within the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The letter was spearheaded by Americans for Responsible Innovation (ARI) and the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI).
The collective call to action emphasizes the critical need for a statutory basis for the AISI to accelerate long-term innovation and understanding of AI. By formally authorizing the Institute at NIST, the signatories believe it will provide a vital venue to bring together leading experts from industry and government to develop voluntary standards that will assist in de-risking the adoption of AI technologies.
The letter, addressed to Senators Maria Cantwell and Ted Cruz, as well as Representatives Frank Lucas and Zoe Lofgren, coincides with the Senate Commerce Committee’s consideration of several AI-related bills, including legislation to authorize the AISI. The full letter can be found HERE.
