In a major step to speed recovery efforts following the devastating Eaton and Palisades wildfires, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced the launch of an AI-powered permitting tool designed to streamline the rebuilding process in Los Angeles City and County.

The new tool, developed by tech company Archistar and supported by philanthropic partners including Steadfast LA, LA Rises, Autodesk, and Amazon, will be provided free of charge to local governments and homeowners. The AI-driven e-check software uses machine learning, computer vision, and automated code checks to pre-screen building plans against local zoning laws, reducing costly permitting delays and cutting plan review time from weeks to hours.

“The current pace of issuing permits locally is not meeting the magnitude of the challenge we face,” said Governor Newsom. “California is partnering with the tech sector and community leaders to rebuild faster and more effectively.”

The initiative is part of a broader strategy by the state to remove bureaucratic barriers and support wildfire survivors. Although permitting authority rests with local governments, the state is playing a key role by providing tools, resources, and executive orders to fast-track recovery.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass welcomed the innovation, saying the tool supports her executive directive to integrate AI into the rebuilding process. “With this technology, we’re removing roadblocks for families trying to return home,” she said.

The County of Los Angeles has also committed to using the software. Supervisor Kathryn Barger highlighted the benefits of AI in saving homeowners time by reducing invalid submissions. “This AI tool will help us deliver efficient solutions to those working hard to rebuild their lives,” she said.

Already used in cities like Seattle, Houston, and Vancouver, the Archistar software is now available to any California municipality through a statewide contract.

Today’s announcement follows a series of executive orders by Governor Newsom aimed at cutting red tape for fire recovery, including suspensions of CEQA requirements and fast-tracking permit reviews under the Coastal Act. The Governor also introduced *Engaged California*, a new platform enabling residents to share feedback on wildfire recovery and other pressing issues.
