The Albuquerque City Council has taken a bold step toward establishing ethical, transparent, and accountable use of artificial intelligence (AI) in city operations. In a recent session, councilors approved Resolution R-24-81, co-sponsored by District 7 Councilor Tammy Fiebelkorn and District 8 Councilor Dan Champine, directing the creation of a City AI Policy Working Group. This group, spearheaded by the Department of Technology and Innovation (DTI), will be tasked with crafting a comprehensive AI policy for Albuquerque, focusing on responsible and fair AI use.

Council Leaders Call for Ethical and Transparent AI Use

Councilor Fiebelkorn said the City must prepare for both the opportunities and risks that come with AI. She noted that a structured approach will help Albuquerque adopt AI responsibly while protecting residents. Councilor Champine added that the initiative creates space for experts and community members to shape a policy that supports innovation without lowering ethical standards.

A Diverse Working Group with Broad Representation

The new working group will draw members from several city departments, including the Albuquerque Police Department’s Real-Time Crime Center, the Department of Finance and Administration, and the Human Resources Department. It will also include representatives from the Albuquerque Police Officers’ Association, local universities, civil rights groups, and technology vendors. City leaders want this diverse mix to encourage public trust and ensure the policy reflects local priorities.

Key Responsibilities and Policy Goals

The working group will develop a mission statement, review all current AI use across the City, and set guidelines for public engagement. It must also recommend safeguards for privacy and data protection. These safeguards will apply to personal information belonging to staff, contractors, and residents. Each recommendation will aim to keep AI systems aligned with ethical and regulatory standards.

Funding and Next Steps

The resolution allocates $50,000 from the City’s general fund to support research, training, and policy development. The working group must deliver a final policy framework to the City Council President within nine months.
