BABL AI is proud to announce that its Chief Ethics Officer, Professor Jovana Davidovic, has published a major new paper in Nature Machine Intelligence titled “Rethinking Human Roles in AI Warfare.” The publication challenges prevailing assumptions about how humans should control artificial intelligence systems in military contexts and offers a new framework for responsible design and policy development.
In the paper, Dr. Davidovic argues that the widely used notion of “meaningful human control” over AI-enabled weapons is too vague to guide effective governance. Instead, she proposes a taxonomy of human roles and responsibilities that more precisely defines how humans and AI systems can—and should—share control in warfare.
The research emphasizes that the question is not simply whether humans should remain involved in AI-driven decision-making, but how that involvement must be structured to ensure accountability, safety, and compliance with international norms.
Dr. Davidovic’s work builds on years of applied ethics research and complements BABL AI’s real-world efforts in AI governance and algorithmic auditing. The publication marks another milestone in BABL AI’s mission to promote transparency, accountability, and human-centered governance in the age of advanced AI systems.
