BABL AI Joins Over 45 Organizations Urging Congress to Establish the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute

BABL AIhas joined more than 45 prominent organizations, companies, and universities in signing a joint letter to Congress to establish the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (AISI) within the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The letter by Americans for Responsible Innovation (ARI) and the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI), calls for formal authorization of the AISI to accelerate safe and responsible AI development.

Strengthening AI Oversight at the Federal Level

The coalition emphasizes that creating a statutory foundation for the AISI is essential to promote long-term innovation and public trust. By formally establishing the Institute, NIST would gain the authority and resources to bring together experts from government, academia, and industry. This collaboration would help develop voluntary standards that reduce AI-related risks while supporting innovation. The letter underscores the growing importance of an institutional venue to coordinate safety research and standard-setting. AISI, as envisioned, would serve as a hub for the scientific evaluation of AI systems and help define best practices for testing, auditing, and deployment.

Congressional Engagement and Policy Momentum

The letter was addressed to Senators Maria Cantwell and Ted Cruz, as well as Representatives Frank Lucas and Zoe Lofgren. It coincides with the Senate Commerce Committee’s review of several AI-related bills, including proposals to authorize the AISI formally. Supporters believe that congressional approval will guarantee the Institute’s independence and ensure consistent funding. Furthermore, they say it will help the United States remain competitive in responsible AI governance and research. The complete letter is available HERE.
