AI Data Press has spotlighted Son-U Michael Paik, General Counsel at BABL AI and longtime AI governance architect, in a new feature titled “As AI Goes Global, Corporations Turn Inward for a Unified GRC Strategy.” The interview highlights Paik’s call for a unified, human-centered governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) framework as multinational corporations adopt increasingly complex and unpredictable AI systems.
With over 25 years of experience designing risk systems for global institutions—including Wall Street firms and major Korean industrial companies—Paik warns that the fragmented adoption of AI across jurisdictions is unsustainable.
“You cannot have lax standards in one jurisdiction and high standards in another,” Paik tells AI Data Press. “That inconsistency will come back to bite you.”
He advocates for a high organizational standard rooted in human rights, transparency, and internal alignment. A unified GRC strategy, he explains, allows companies to avoid siloed decision-making and equips them to manage the inherent unpredictability of AI technology—what Paik likens to “the demon cat from Adventure Time: a character with approximate knowledge of many things.”
The article delves into Paik’s belief that AI governance is not solely a technical issue but a cultural and organizational challenge. He stresses the need for incentives that reward risk awareness and protect institutional knowledge, arguing that success depends on cooperation from experienced employees—not just compliance with policy.
“Mid-level and senior people should be excited about AI. What they do and what they know is incredibly hard to capture,” Paik says. “Without their cooperation and wisdom, it will not work.”
As BABL AI’s General Counsel, Paik plays a central role in advising global organizations on how to align their governance strategies with ethical and legal principles. He also serves as a Global Ambassador and Responsible AI Governor for South Korea and is an Advisory Board Member for the Institute of Health & Management.
