California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced the launch of Ask CAL FIRE,” a new AI-powered chatbot designed to help residents access wildfire preparedness and emergency information in 70 languages.

Hosted on the CAL FIRE website (fire.ca.gov), the chatbot aims to provide real-time, accessible guidance on wildfire incidents, home safety strategies, and emergency resources—day or night. Powered by artificial intelligence, the tool responds to commonly asked questions and directs users to relevant pages for more detailed information. The chatbot also collects insights about the types of information residents are seeking, helping CAL FIRE improve its communication and services.

California is harnessing technology and innovation to help people when it matters most,” said Governor Newsom. “This chatbot connects Californians with life-saving information in the language they speak.”

CAL FIRE Director and Fire Chief Joe Tyler emphasized the importance of speed and accessibility: “In an era of fast-moving wildfires, fast-moving information is essential. Tools like this help ensure Californians from all walks of life get the guidance they need to stay safe and informed.”

The launch of “Ask CAL FIRE” reflects California’s broader strategy to modernize emergency services and ensure equitable access to public safety resources. It complements the state’s other advanced firefighting efforts, including the use of artificial intelligence, satellites, and over 1,000 wildfire-monitoring cameras. In 2023, CAL FIRE and UC San Diego were recognized by TIME magazine for developing an AI system that helps detect wildfires early.

California continues to invest heavily in prevention and response, with the largest aerial firefighting fleet in the world and nearly 2 million acres treated in recent years. Residents can now turn to the chatbot for up-to-date fire information, safety tips, and more at fire.ca.gov.
