UPDATE — MARCH 2026:

Since the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) published its 2024 report, “Trusted Journalism in the Age of Generative AI,” the organization has continued expanding its research on how artificial intelligence is reshaping the global news industry. In April 2025, the EBU released a follow-up study titled “Leading Newsrooms in the Age of Generative AI.” This new study built on the earlier report by incorporating additional interviews with media executives and experts from around the world. The updated research highlighted how rapidly generative AI tools were advancing. It also urged news organizations to develop clearer strategies for integrating AI while protecting editorial independence and public trust.

The 2025 report emphasized several emerging priorities for newsrooms. These included defining the mission and values of journalism in an AI-driven media landscape, balancing personalization technologies with shared public information experiences, and strengthening direct relationships with audiences rather than relying heavily on platform distribution. Media leaders interviewed for the report also expressed increasing concern about the growing volume of AI-generated content online. Additionally, they discussed the risks it poses to information integrity.

Later in 2025, the EBU coordinated a large international research project examining how AI assistants handle news-related queries. The study involved 22 public media organizations across 18 countries. It analyzed more than 3,000 responses generated by AI systems such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, and Perplexity. Researchers identified recurring reliability challenges, including accuracy problems in roughly 45 percent of responses, sourcing issues in about 31 percent, and fully unreliable answers in approximately 20 percent of cases.

In response to these findings, the EBU released a “News Integrity in AI Assistants Toolkit.” This resource is designed to help news organizations evaluate how their content is used by AI systems and to encourage greater transparency and accountability from AI developers.

As of early 2026, the EBU has continued hosting policy discussions and industry workshops focused on AI and journalism. These events include seminars exploring tools such as the EBU AI Sandbox. While a new full news report for 2026 has not yet been released, the organization continues to examine how generative AI, AI-powered search tools, and automated content systems are reshaping the future of trusted journalism.

EBU Releases 2024 News Report on AI’s Impact on Journalism, Emphasizing Ethical Integration and Trust

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has released its 2024 News Report, “Trusted Journalism in the Age of Generative AI,” which explores the profound implications of artificial intelligence (AI) on journalism and the news industry. The report delves into the opportunities and challenges presented by generative AI technologies. It emphasizes the need for maintaining journalistic integrity in an increasingly complex information ecosystem.

Drawing on in-depth interviews with 40 media leaders and academic experts from various continents, the report provides a comprehensive roadmap for the future of journalism in the AI era. The primary objective is to guide news organizations on how to ethically integrate AI into their operations while preserving the core values of accuracy, accountability, and public trust.

Dr. Alexandra Borchardt, the lead author of the report, underscores the urgency of the moment, stating, “We stand at a crossroads where the choices we make about integrating AI into news work will determine whether we enhance journalism’s connections with its audiences or undermine the credibility and trusted relationships its legitimacy is built on.” The report aims to assist media organizations in making informed decisions that will shape the production and delivery of news for years to come.

The EBU News Report highlights the necessity of independent reporting to inform citizens and uphold democratic values. While acknowledging the transformative potential of generative AI in enhancing and diversifying journalism, the report stresses the indispensable role of human oversight in maintaining accuracy and accountability. AI technologies, when integrated responsibly, can enrich the news production and consumption experience, benefiting both journalists and audiences.

Core Insights for News Organizations

Key insights from the report include:

  • Fact-based storytelling remains critical, even in the AI era.

  • Human oversight ensures AI tools hold power to account rather than distort it.

  • Building loyal relationships with audiences is essential in a fragmented digital world.

  • Journalists remain irreplaceable in deciding editorial priorities.

These findings underscore the enduring value of human judgment alongside technological innovation.

Balancing Innovation and Risk

The report explores how AI can enrich news production while raising serious risks. Potential pitfalls include accuracy problems, privacy violations, bias, intellectual property disputes, and malicious misuse of AI. Therefore, the EBU urges media organizations to be vigilant. Innovation should not come at the cost of accuracy or public trust.

The Role of Big Tech and Regulation

Another theme is the growing dependence of newsrooms on Big Tech. Generative AI has created new dependencies that raise questions about fairness, competition, and influence. As a result, the report calls for stronger engagement with regulators and for modernizing rules to address emerging technologies. Media organizations are encouraged to provide feedback on how regulations can keep pace with rapid change.

A Dual Role for AI in Newsrooms

Liz Corbin, EBU Director of News, highlights AI’s dual role: it can both transform newsrooms and threaten journalistic trust. “Our mission,” she states, “is to harness AI’s potential while safeguarding the integrity of journalism.”The report closes with practical advice and real-world examples from EBU Members and other media organizations. These case studies show how AI can be used responsibly to enhance journalism while protecting democratic values.
