The Gambia’s National Assembly has passed the Personal Data Protection and Privacy Bill 2025, marking a major step toward protecting citizens’ personal information and reinforcing privacy rights in the country’s fast-growing digital economy, Gambiana reported.

Approved during the Assembly’s Third Ordinary Session, the new law establishes The Gambia’s first comprehensive legal framework for personal data protection. It sets clear standards for how individuals’ data can be collected, processed, and shared, aligning the nation with international best practices in digital governance.

Information Minister Dr. Ismaila Ceesay hailed the passage of the bill as a “major milestone” in The Gambia’s digital transformation, saying it would help “protect the privacy of citizens while supporting innovation and digital growth.”

The Ministry of Information said the legislation was the product of extensive collaboration between government officials, the National Assembly’s ICT and Education Committee, civil society, and development partners. The ministry thanked all contributors for ensuring the final version balances global standards with the country’s unique social and economic context.

The bill’s adoption comes as The Gambia seeks to expand its digital infrastructure and attract investment in emerging technology sectors. Officials said the government’s next steps will focus on implementing the law through capacity-building programs, raising public awareness, and establishing institutional mechanisms for compliance and enforcement.

The Ministry of Information said the new framework “reflects a collective vision of a more secure, inclusive, and rights-respecting digital society for all Gambians.”

The law places The Gambia among a growing number of African nations adopting privacy and data protection regulations amid rising concerns over digital surveillance, cybercrime, and misuse of personal information.
