Ghana has announced plans to develop a National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy as part of a broader push to accelerate digital transformation and position itself as a regional tech leader. The initiative was unveiled recently in Accra by the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, during a press briefing.
The strategy aims to guide the ethical, inclusive, and responsible deployment of AI technologies to support national development goals. “The Ministry has prioritized dialogue on Artificial Intelligence to fully assess its opportunities, security implications, and resource demands,” the Minister stated.
Key to the initiative is the digitization of Ghana’s essential data sets, which will serve as the foundation for training AI systems grounded in local knowledge and cultural nuances. “By anchoring AI development in our data, we are safeguarding digital sovereignty and building truly Ghanaian technologies in design and purpose,” George emphasized.
Strategic partnerships have been formed with international organizations including the British High Commission and UNESCO to support the development of the AI strategy and blueprint.
The national AI plan is part of a wider digital transformation agenda that includes legislative reforms aimed at modernizing outdated technology laws. George confirmed the Ministry is reviewing and redrafting laws to better support innovation, investment, and consumer protection.
The initiative will also complement other national digital efforts, such as the One Million Coders Program, which focuses on training youth in digital skills, and the forthcoming Ghana Innovation and Startup Bill to support tech entrepreneurship.
“This is a strategic effort to harness AI for economic growth while preserving our digital sovereignty in a rapidly advancing global tech landscape,” George said.
