Indonesia has taken a major step toward realizing its vision as a global digital powerhouse with the launch of the Indonesia AI Center of Excellence (CoE) in Jakarta. The new institution, according to Komdigi, will serve as a key driver in implementing the country’s forthcoming National AI Roadmap, according to Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital, Nezar Patria.
Speaking at the launch event held at The St. Regis Jakarta, Nezar emphasized that the AI CoE is not just symbolic, but a functional engine designed to translate the roadmap into concrete, actionable programs. “This is not an isolated initiative. The AI CoE will function as the implementation arm of our national AI strategy,” he stated.
The National AI Roadmap will rest on five foundational pillars: ethics, infrastructure and data governance, talent development, investment, and R&D. The AI CoE is expected to strengthen each of these pillars. It will lead efforts in developing national ethical AI audits, and support infrastructure standardization and data governance. They also will promote public AI literacy and curriculum reforms. Additionally, the center will help secure targeted funding for priority AI programs and accelerate applied AI research through open innovation.
The initiative reflects Indonesia’s commitment to inclusive technological growth, with a vision for “Indonesia Digital 2045.” A pilot collaboration is already underway in Papua. That’s where an AI CoE will expand access to AI tools and training in underserved regions.
“With the support of global tech partners like NVIDIA and Cisco, we can empower up to two million Indonesians with critical AI skills,” Nezar said.
The launch signals a new chapter in Indonesia’s AI ambitions, combining public-private collaboration with a forward-looking national vision.
