Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has announced the full-scale expansion of its Claude for Enterprise deployment, making advanced artificial intelligence capabilities available to more than 10,000 scientists, researchers, and staff across the facility. The move represents one of the largest enterprise-level AI deployments in the U.S. Department of Energy’s national lab system.

The expanded partnership with Anthropic aims to enhance scientific research. Specifically in critical areas such as nuclear deterrence, energy security, materials science, and computational biology. Officials say Claude will serve as an AI assistant capable of processing massive datasets, generating hypotheses, and accelerating discovery. On top of meeting the rigorous security and compliance standards required for national security work.

“This expanded partnership demonstrates how frontier AI can amplify the capabilities of world-class researchers working on some of humanity’s most pressing challenges,” said Greg Herweg, Chief Technology Officer at LLNL.

LLNL’s custom Claude application features an extended context window that can analyze entire codebases or complex datasets in a single query. It’s designed for secure government environments. The platform includes enterprise-level protections such as role-based access controls, audit logging, and end-to-end encryption.

Anthropic’s Head of Public Sector, Thiyagu Ramasamy, called the collaboration a model for how AI can support government research. “This partnership shows what’s possible when Anthropic’s cutting-edge AI meets world-class scientific expertise,” he said.

Claude is already being used in multiple mission-critical areas, including fusion energy research, high-performance computing, emergency response via the National Atmospheric Release Advisory Center, and AI-driven optimization in advanced manufacturing and biosecurity.

The expansion follows a successful pilot and interactive events such as LLNL’s AI Jam and aiEDGE for Innovation Day. Over 3,000 staff members explored Claude’s potential to transform research operations at those events.
