Matthew Graviss has announced his departure from the U.S. Department of State as its chief data and artificial intelligence (AI) officer, a role he has held since December 2020. In a LinkedIn post, Graviss reflected on his tenure, highlighting efforts to modernize the department through data-driven initiatives and digital tools.
“Serving as State’s first Chief Data and AI Officer has been an honor, and I’m immensely proud of the work we’ve done to modernize the Department with data and digital tools. But beyond the technology, I’m most grateful for playing a small role in transforming the culture—helping State embrace the power of tech to drive diplomacy,” Graviss wrote.
Graviss did not specify his next role but indicated that more details would be shared soon.
During his time at the State Department, Graviss led initiatives to improve data accessibility, interoperability, and actionability across the agency. As the department’s first chief data officer, he played a key role in establishing a data governance framework and advancing analytics capabilities to support diplomatic and operational decisions.
Graviss also served as the managing director for the Office of Management Strategy and Solution’s Center for Analytics, where he worked to promote a data-centric culture and develop modern data technology solutions. His leadership contributed to expanding the agency’s use of artificial intelligence in foreign policy and internal operations.
Before joining the State Department, Graviss held leadership roles at the Department of Homeland Security . He served as chief data officer at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and held director positions at both the Transportation Security Administration and Customs and Border Protection. His experience in data strategy and analytics spans multiple federal agencies, reflecting a career dedicated to leveraging technology for government efficiency and decision-making.
Matthew Graviss’ departure marks the end of a significant chapter for the State Department’s data modernization efforts. His successor has not yet been announced.
