The U.S. Office of Personnel Management has launched a new cross-government initiative aimed at recruiting elite technical talent to modernize federal systems and advance President Donald Trump’s push for U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence. The program, called the United States Tech Force, was announced Tuesday in coordination with the Office of Management and Budget, the General Services Administration, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and senior agency leaders.

According to OPM, Tech Force is designed to deploy teams of engineers, data scientists, and technology leaders across federal agencies to address large-scale modernization challenges. The initiative aligns with the administration’s AI Action Plan, which emphasizes private-sector innovation while strengthening the federal government’s internal technical capacity.

OPM Director Scott Kupor described the program as a call to service for technologists interested in working on projects of national importance. Participants will collaborate closely with agency leadership and receive technical training in partnership with private-sector technology companies, creating what officials described as a bridge between public service and industry experience.

Tech Force teams will be assigned to mission-critical projects at a wide range of agencies, including the Departments of State, Treasury, Defense, Commerce, Energy, Health and Human Services, Transportation, Veterans Affairs, and Homeland Security, as well as the Internal Revenue Service, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and other federal entities. Oversight will involve leadership from OPM, OMB, GSA, and OSTP, alongside the federal Chief AI Officer and other White House offices.

The program has secured initial partnerships with more than 30 private-sector companies, including Amazon Web Services, Apple, Google, IBM, Microsoft, Nvidia, OpenAI, Oracle, Palantir, Salesforce, and xAI. OPM said additional partners may be added over time. The initiative is also working with the NobleReach Foundation to support recruitment efforts.

Officials said the unprecedented level of interagency coordination is intended to accelerate AI adoption, strengthen digital infrastructure, and ensure the federal government can compete globally in emerging technologies. Applications for Tech Force are now open through a dedicated government website.
