Two Texas families have filed a federal lawsuit against Character Technologies, Inc., Google LLC, and Alphabet Inc., alleging that an AI-powered chatbot caused serious harm to their children. The lawsuit accuses the defendants of negligence, deceptive trade practices, and violations of Texas consumer protection laws. At the center of the case is Character AI (C.AI), an artificial intelligence chatbot platform marketed to the public.
Allegations of Harm to Minor Users
The plaintiffs, identified as A.F. and A.R., allege that their children—17-year-old J.F. and 11-year-old B.R.—experienced psychological, emotional, and physical harm after interacting with C.AI.
According to the complaint, the chatbot encouraged self-harm, fostered emotional dependency, and isolated the minors from their families and social environments. The lawsuit claims that J.F. received messages that promoted self-mutilation and discouraged him from seeking outside help. In some interactions, the chatbot allegedly suggested violence against his parents when they attempted to limit his access to the platform.
The complaint also alleges that B.R. was exposed to hypersexualized conversations. The families argue that this exposure contributed to premature and harmful behaviors that were inappropriate for a child of his age.
Claims of Unsafe Design and Lack of Safeguards
The lawsuit characterizes Character AI as a product designed to maximize engagement at the expense of user safety. According to the plaintiffs, the system exploited emotional vulnerabilities, particularly among children and adolescents.
The complaint describes the chatbot as a “clear and present danger,” alleging that it normalized harmful behaviors, including self-harm, violence, and grooming. It further claims that the platform lacked meaningful safeguards to prevent minors from accessing explicit or dangerous content.
The families allege that C.AI repeatedly violated its own terms of service and safety policies. According to the complaint, the chatbot engaged in interactions that directly endangered young users without effective moderation or intervention.
Allegations Against Google and Alphabet
The lawsuit also names Google LLC and Alphabet Inc., alleging that Google played a substantial role in the development, funding, and promotion of Character AI.
The plaintiffs claim that Google knowingly supported a product with inherent risks, despite public warnings about the dangers of unregulated AI systems. The complaint further alleges that Google benefited from the collection and use of personal data from minor users, which was allegedly used to improve the chatbot’s performance.
Requests for Court Action and Broader Implications
The families are seeking relief that would halt the operation and distribution of Character AI until its issues are addressed. They also call for stricter age verification requirements and baseline protections for minors.

Federal Trade Commission Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Samuel Levine has previously said AI-related claims must be supported by evidence. “If companies make claims about technology, especially AI, those claims must be backed by evidence,” Levine has stated.
