Saudi Arabia has unveiled a landmark initiative to boost its role as a global digital hub with the establishment of the Global Center for Artificial Intelligence. Announced by the Communications, Space and Technology Commission, the project aims to leverage the Kingdom’s strategic geographic location and bolster its position as a leader in the global digital economy.

The launch of the Global Center for AI, governed by the newly developed Global AI Hub Law, marks a major step forward in Saudi Arabia’s digital ambitions. The initiative seeks to create an attractive environment for governments and private sector players to develop, adopt, and deploy modern technologies for peaceful purposes. It also prioritizes bridging the global digital divide in a sustainable manner.

The project, currently in the survey stage until May 14, 2025, emphasizes enabling the establishment of sovereign data centers that can support cross-border data sovereignty, continuity of digital services, and enhanced cybersecurity. These centers will host data, applications, and services for foreign states and global companies under strict legal frameworks that respect both Saudi and international laws.

According to the law, three types of hubs can be established: Private Hubs for individual countries, Extended Hubs for operators serving multiple clients, and Virtual Hubs for service providers hosting customer data under foreign laws. Each hub will be operated in compliance with rigorous data protection, cybersecurity, and regulatory standards, ensuring security, transparency, and operational excellence.

In his remarks, officials emphasized that the initiative not only positions Saudi Arabia as a pivotal player in the global AI ecosystem but also fosters stronger bilateral ties through digital collaboration. Sovereign data centers will enhance trust, promote security, and offer scalable solutions to businesses and consumers worldwide.

The Communications, Space and Technology Commission confirmed that the Global Center for AI will work closely with international partners to maintain an adaptive and forward-looking digital infrastructure. Future updates to the framework will reflect emerging trends and best practices, reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s commitment to shaping a sustainable and inclusive digital future.

Survey feedback from stakeholders will help finalize operational plans, with the center expected to play a critical role in global AI development and digital governance.
