The Slovenian government has adopted a proposal for the “Act on the Implementation of the EU Artificial Intelligence (AI) Act,” marking a major step toward harmonizing national legislation with the European Union’s sweeping AI regulatory framework.

The EU AI Act, adopted earlier this year, establishes the first comprehensive legal framework governing the development, deployment, and oversight of artificial intelligence systems across the bloc. Slovenia’s proposed implementation act aligns the country’s laws with the EU regulation by designating national supervisory authorities, defining enforcement mechanisms, and introducing penalties for violations.

According to the government, the framework will ensure that AI systems used and developed in Slovenia comply with strict European standards aimed at protecting public health, safety, and fundamental rights while fostering technological innovation. The act also empowers authorities to establish regulatory sandboxes, allowing companies to test AI solutions in controlled environments before widespread deployment.

In a notable move, the proposal introduces the possibility of appointing an AI Ethics Commissioner, who would oversee ethical considerations in AI development and implementation. This reflects Slovenia’s commitment to balancing innovation with accountability and trust.

By adopting the proposal, Slovenia positions itself among the EU’s leading member states in AI governance, both in terms of technological infrastructure and legislative readiness. Once enacted, the law will enable Slovenian agencies, businesses, and developers to navigate the EU AI Act’s high-risk, transparency, and compliance obligations effectively.

The government emphasized that this national framework supports the EU’s broader goal of creating a unified digital market, ensuring AI systems across member states meet consistent standards for safety, transparency, and reliability while encouraging responsible innovation.
