The United Arab Emirates unveiled a major new investment in artificial intelligence for emerging economies during the G20 summit in Johannesburg, where Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan represented the UAE President.

Speaking on behalf of President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince announced the launch of the UAE’s US$1 billion AI for Development initiative, aimed at accelerating economic and social progress across Africa. The program will finance AI-driven projects focused on strengthening digital infrastructure, improving government services, boosting productivity, and raising quality of life.

Delivering the UAE’s statement in the summit’s opening session—centered on global trade, development financing, and the rising debt burden—Sheikh Khaled stressed that the initiative reflects the UAE’s broader commitment to international cooperation.

He conveyed the President’s greetings to world leaders and thanked South African President Cyril Ramaphosa for hosting the summit, calling the gathering “a reflection of global partnership and a catalyst for deeper economic integration.”

The Crown Prince highlighted the UAE’s efforts to support a transparent and inclusive global trading system, one that empowers developing countries to shape the future of international commerce. He underscored the importance of affordable financing for development projects in advanced technology, energy, health, and agriculture, coupled with long-term investments in skills, knowledge transfer, and community empowerment.

The AI for Development initiative, he said, is designed to help African nations accelerate digital transformation and unlock economic opportunities driven by modern technology.

Sheikh Khaled reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to working with G20 partners “to advance global development and shared prosperity.”

The UAE delegation included senior ministers and advisors across international cooperation, investment, foreign affairs, and media. This marks the UAE’s sixth appearance at a G20 summit, following participation in Brazil (2024), India (2023), Indonesia (2022), Saudi Arabia (2020), and France (2011).
