A vote on the monumental Artificial Intelligence Act, also known as the EU AI Act, is coming sooner than expected. Originally, the full European Parliament plenary vote on the EU AI Act was anticipated in April, but now it appears the full Parliament will vote a month earlier.

According to documents from the IMCO Committee Press, a vote is scheduled for March 13 at 12:00. This news comes several weeks after the Internal Market and Civil Liberties Committees of the European Parliament endorsed the EU AI Act. It also comes just days after the European AI Office, responsible for supporting the implementation of the EU AI Act, commenced its operations.

The EU AI Act will be implemented in stages, with compliance for prohibited AI systems required by 2025 and compliance for high-risk AI systems mandated by 2026. Given the extensive obligations for high-risk systems, organizations should initiate their compliance efforts promptly. They will need time to inventory systems, conduct assessments, implement controls, and obtain certification. Delaying these actions could jeopardize meeting deadlines and result in penalties. Experts recommend commencing work now to identify gaps and achieve compliance.
