A new poll conducted by Americans for Responsible Innovation (ARI) reveals widespread public concern over artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots, particularly those designed for romantic interactions and their potential influence on minors. The survey, which gathered responses from 2,076 registered voters, highlights skepticism about AI’s role in personal relationships and its broader societal impact.
According to the poll, a significant 63% of respondents expressed some level of concern about AI chatbots designed to form romantic relationships with users, with 39% saying they were “very concerned.” When asked whether technology companies should offer such chatbots, 61% of respondents disagreed, including 43% who “strongly disagreed.”
The protection of minors was a particularly prominent issue. A striking 82% of those surveyed agreed that AI chatbots with romantic or erotic functions should be prohibited for users under 16. Only 11% opposed such restrictions.
The survey also found strong support for accountability measures if AI chatbots contribute to harm. When asked whether companies should be held responsible if a chatbot encourages self-harm or violence, 87% of respondents agreed, with 68% expressing strong support for corporate accountability.
Concerns about AI’s overall societal impact remain high, especially regarding younger generations. More than three-quarters (79%) of those surveyed said they were at least somewhat concerned about how AI will shape the future for younger people.
On the regulatory front, 58% of Americans worry that the government is not doing enough to regulate AI chatbots, compared to 24% who believe regulation may go too far.
The findings suggest growing public unease with the rapid development of AI technology and its ethical implications, reinforcing calls for stricter oversight and consumer protections.
