The New York State Office of Information Technology Services (ITS) announced the appointment of Shreya Amin as the state’s first Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer, a role aimed at shaping AI strategy across state government and advancing innovation through responsible AI deployment.

With over 17 years of experience in AI transformation and data-driven initiatives across sectors including healthcare, education, and civic tech, Amin brings a deep understanding of ethical, impactful AI. She previously served as Chief Data and AI Scientist at Wellist and founded an AI/ML consultancy. Her career has focused on implementing AI frameworks that prioritize transparency, equity, and human oversight.

“I am deeply honored and incredibly excited to join the State of New York as its first Chief AI Officer,” Amin said. “This is an extraordinary opportunity to shape our future through responsible AI.”

As Chief AI Officer, Amin will guide the implementation of AI tools and systems that align with state goals, comply with ITS policies, and deliver measurable benefits to New Yorkers. Her leadership will focus on refining the state’s AI guidance documents, improving agency-level adoption strategies, and ensuring ethical use of emerging technologies.

New York State Chief Information Officer Dru Rai praised the appointment, calling Amin’s background in both public and private sectors a valuable asset. “Her depth of knowledge and professional experience will be instrumental as we collaborate with New York State agencies and partners to advance responsible innovation,” Rai said.

The announcement builds on Governor Kathy Hochul’s 2023 launch of the Empire AI initiative and ITS’s development of the first-ever statewide policy on acceptable AI use. Amin will now lead efforts to optimize these policies, helping agencies inventory current AI systems, create a public-facing registry, and foster secure, efficient deployment across state services.
