The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is calling for public comment on its newly announced Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy, which aims to chart a bold path from current data-driven analytics to fully autonomous, self-documenting AI systems in biomedical research and healthcare.

The Request for Information (RFI) outlines NIH’s intent to create an agency-wide framework that enhances research, transparency, and operational efficiency through advanced AI technologies. The initiative will support the development of a one-year action plan and a broader strategic roadmap for deploying AI tools in areas ranging from clinical decision-making to grant management.

NIH is particularly interested in feedback on foundational themes—such as data readiness, trust, and workforce development—as well as milestones for transitioning toward increasingly autonomous AI applications. The agency also seeks input on high-impact use cases for AI in biomedical discovery, strategies to enhance model reproducibility, and ideas for collaborative development of AI tools across internal and external research communities.

Operational improvements are also in scope. NIH is soliciting ideas on how AI can enhance peer review, grant submissions, and workflows at its clinical centers. Additionally, it is exploring frameworks for evaluating AI safety and equity in healthcare settings in partnership with agencies like the FDA and VA.

NIH emphasizes the importance of public trust, calling for standards and audit trails to ensure AI systems remain transparent, reproducible, and ethical. It is also examining potential governance models that balance open science with national security, privacy, and competitiveness.

The deadline to submit comments is July 15, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. ET. Responses can be emailed to [email protected] and should be no longer than seven pages.

This RFI is for planning purposes only and does not obligate the NIH to fund or implement specific proposals.
