The World Health Organization’s Regional Office for Europe has launched a new Technical Advisory Group on Artificial Intelligence for Health (TAG-AI), aiming to ensure that the rapid rise of AI technologies in medicine is guided by ethics, equity, and accountability.
The group, officially introduced on September 24 in Porto, will advise WHO/Europe’s Regional Director, Dr. Hans Henri P. Kluge, for an initial two-year mandate. Chosen from a pool of 330 applicants, the 10 experts represent diverse fields and regions across Europe and beyond. “Together, you form a strong, powerful team,” Dr. Kluge said at the launch, emphasizing the group’s role in shaping how AI is applied to improve health outcomes.
TAG-AI will provide guidance on integrating ethical principles into national and regional AI strategies for health. Its functions include advising on governance, oversight, and regulatory approaches; supporting policy development and research in emerging AI fields such as machine learning and natural language processing; and helping countries assess the safety, effectiveness, and equity of AI systems deployed in health settings.
The advisory group will also work to build capacity, foster awareness, and promote advocacy for inclusive AI applications — particularly in low-income contexts and underrepresented communities. Members are expected to meet at least once annually, with additional working groups convened as needed.
The initiative builds on WHO/Europe’s “Digital health action plan for the European Region 2023–2030,” which prioritizes supporting Member States in governing digital transformation. By leveraging AI responsibly, WHO aims to help governments harness innovation while safeguarding human rights, transparency, and trust in health care.
TAG-AI includes experts from institutions in France, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Finland, Uzbekistan, and the United States, spanning disciplines from public health and law to computer science and medical practice.
