The UK government has announced a new partnership with Google DeepMind aimed at accelerating national renewal by applying advanced artificial intelligence to science, energy, education, and public services. The agreement, unveiled on December 11, positions AI as a central driver of economic growth and public-sector modernization while reinforcing the UK’s role as a global hub for AI research and innovation.
Under the partnership, Google DeepMind will open its first automated research laboratory in the UK next year. The facility will combine artificial intelligence, robotics, and the company’s Gemini models to accelerate scientific discovery, with an initial focus on developing next-generation superconducting materials. These materials could enable more efficient medical imaging, faster and greener computing, and breakthroughs in transport and clean energy, supporting the UK’s long-term net-zero goals.
UK scientists will receive priority access to some of Google DeepMind’s most advanced AI tools, including AlphaGenome, which supports DNA sequencing and disease research, and AI co-scientist systems designed to help researchers generate hypotheses and research proposals. Officials compared the tools to an “AI microscope,” enabling scientists to tackle problems of unprecedented complexity and scale.
The agreement also expands collaboration with the UK’s AI Security Institute to ensure AI systems are developed safely and responsibly. Joint research will focus on managing emerging risks while supporting innovation across critical sectors. In parallel, Google DeepMind will support the government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan and its £137 million AI for Science Strategy, with an initial mission to accelerate drug discovery and medical treatments.
Beyond research, the partnership explores practical applications of AI in everyday life, including cleaner energy systems, smarter public services through automation of routine administrative tasks, and new AI tools for education aligned with the national curriculum.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the deal would ensure AI delivers tangible public benefits, while Technology Secretary Liz Kendall described it as a model for UK–US tech collaboration. Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis said the partnership builds on Britain’s innovation legacy to advance science, strengthen security, and improve daily life.
