The U.S. Department of Labor has released a new Artificial Intelligence Literacy Framework designed to guide nationwide efforts to prepare workers and students for an increasingly AI-driven economy, according to a press release issued February 13.

Published by the Department’s Employment and Training Administration, the framework establishes a foundational structure for AI literacy programs across workforce and education systems. It outlines five core content areas and seven delivery principles intended to support the design and implementation of AI skills training while allowing flexibility across industries, job roles and educational settings.

Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer said the framework reflects the agency’s commitment to ensuring workers can benefit from AI-related economic growth. She said the guidance is intended to accelerate effective AI skill development and help equip Americans with foundational knowledge needed as artificial intelligence becomes more widely integrated into the workplace.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon also emphasized the role of AI literacy in strengthening the future workforce, describing the initiative as part of broader efforts to prepare students for evolving technological challenges and opportunities.

The framework follows recent Department of Labor guidance encouraging the use of Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act funding and governor’s reserve funds to support AI-related skills training. Officials said the new resource draws on input from employers, training providers, state and local agencies, and other workforce and education stakeholders.

According to the department, the framework is designed to evolve over time as AI capabilities advance and labor market demands change. The agency said ongoing stakeholder feedback will help shape future updates and improvements.

The release aligns with the Trump administration’s broader AI workforce strategy, including implementation of the federal AI Action Plan and America’s Talent Strategy, both aimed at strengthening U.S. competitiveness and workforce readiness in emerging technologies.

The Employment and Training Administration is inviting additional feedback from workforce and education stakeholders regarding effective AI literacy practices, barriers to implementation and opportunities for further guidance. The department is also offering training webinars for organizations interested in adopting the framework as part of their AI skills development initiatives.
