AMD and OpenAI announced a sweeping multi-year agreement to deploy up to 6 gigawatts of AMD Instinct GPUs, marking one of the largest commitments yet to expand global AI infrastructure.

The deal begins with a 1-gigawatt rollout of AMD’s forthcoming Instinct MI450 series GPUs in the second half of 2026, with additional phases tied to OpenAI’s scaling needs and AMD’s future product generations. The companies said the collaboration extends a partnership that began with AMD’s MI300X and MI350X GPUs, aiming to align hardware and software roadmaps to support OpenAI’s rapidly growing compute requirements.

“This partnership brings the best of AMD and OpenAI together to create a true win-win enabling the world’s most ambitious AI buildout,” said Dr. Lisa Su, AMD chair and CEO. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called the deal “a major step in building the compute capacity needed to realize AI’s full potential.”

The agreement also includes a financial component: AMD has issued OpenAI a warrant for up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock, with vesting tied to deployment milestones and AMD share-price performance. Jean Hu, AMD CFO, said the deal could deliver “tens of billions of dollars in revenue” for the chipmaker and be “highly accretive” to earnings.

By committing to rack-scale AI solutions across multiple GPU generations, AMD and OpenAI aim to accelerate innovation while addressing surging global demand for compute. OpenAI President Greg Brockman said the collaboration will help scale AI tools “that benefit people everywhere.”

The companies positioned the deal as not just a commercial partnership but as foundational to advancing the broader AI ecosystem.
