A nationwide crackdown on illegal robocalls is underway as 51 attorneys general launched “Operation Robocall Roundup,” targeting 37 telecommunications companies accused of helping scammers flood consumers’ phones with fraudulent calls.
The multistate initiative, spearheaded by the Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force, aims to hold noncompliant voice providers accountable for failing to implement basic federal safeguards. These include registering in the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) Robocall Mitigation Database, filing mitigation plans, and cooperating with government traceback requests that track illegal robocall activity.
The 37 companies receiving warning letters range from small operators to international providers such as DigitalOcean LLC, BBT Voice Private Limited, and Whisl Telecom. Authorities say their failure to comply with mitigation protocols has allowed robocall traffic to pass through to downstream providers and ultimately reach consumers across the U.S.
In addition to the warning letters, the task force has notified nearly 100 downstream providers that they may be indirectly routing scam calls through these noncompliant networks. The goal is to cut off robocallers at every level of the telecom chain.
The FCC is also stepping up enforcement. It announced that seven of the targeted companies will be removed from its mitigation database—effectively blacklisting them from participating in lawful call traffic. Once delisted, other carriers will be prohibited from routing any calls from their networks.
Established in 2022, the Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force investigates telecom providers responsible for facilitating large volumes of scam and fraud calls. The task force is led by attorneys general from North Carolina, Indiana, and Ohio and represents a bipartisan commitment to restoring trust in telecommunications.
Consumers are urged to avoid answering calls or texts from unknown numbers and to report suspicious activity to their state attorney general’s office.
