A coalition of universities, businesses, and public sector organizations has launched the Connecticut AI Alliance (CAIA), a statewide initiative aimed at positioning Connecticut as a leader in artificial intelligence research, development, and workforce training.  

The alliance brings together 16 academic institutions and six nonprofit organizations, forming a collaborative ecosystem designed to advance AI applications, support business growth, and train the next generation of AI professionals.  

“The Connecticut AI Alliance represents a significant milestone in our state’s technology landscape,” said Vahid Behzadan, Ph.D., co-founder of CAIA and assistant professor of computer science and data science at the University of New Haven. “By bringing together our state’s academic institutions, industry partners, government agencies, and community organizations, we’re creating a collaborative ecosystem that will drive innovation, economic growth, and workforce development in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.”  

CAIA’s mission is built on five key pillars:  

• Research and Development: Encouraging interdisciplinary collaborations to tackle real-world AI challenges  

• Workforce Training: Providing skills-based programs to prepare workers for AI-driven industries  

• Business and Industry Growth: Supporting AI startups and business development through shared resources  

• Innovation Infrastructure: Establishing a state-wide AI computing cluster for research and development  

• Community Engagement: Hosting events, workshops, and educational programs to build an AI-literate community  

Participating academic institutions include Yale University, the University of Connecticut, Wesleyan University, Quinnipiac University, and others. Supporting associations and nonprofits include the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering and the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technologies.  

By connecting research institutions with industry leaders, CAIA seeks to bridge the gap between AI research and commercialization while ensuring Connecticut’s workforce remains competitive in an AI-driven economy. The alliance will be governed by a Board of Directors and an executive team.
