The European Commission’s AI Office has announced the creation of a new Signatory Taskforce under the General-Purpose AI (GPAI) Code of Practice, aiming to support companies as they prepare for the enforcement of the EU AI Act’s rules on advanced AI models.
The General-Purpose AI Code of Practice is a voluntary instrument designed to help providers of general-purpose AI models demonstrate compliance with the AI Act. While the Act’s transparency, safety and accountability requirements for GPAI providers have applied since August 2, 2025, enforcement will begin in August 2026. The Taskforce is intended to promote consistent interpretation and implementation of the Code ahead of that deadline.
Chaired by the AI Office, the Signatory Taskforce brings together companies that have signed onto the Code and chosen to become Taskforce Members. According to the Commission, most Code signatories have joined the initiative.
The Taskforce will serve as a forum for exchanging views on how to apply the Code’s commitments in practice. It may provide input on guidance documents, without prejudice to the AI Office’s formal public consultation processes. It will also facilitate discussions on technological developments, research findings and emerging evidence relevant to compliance with the Code.
In addition, the Taskforce may gather insights from third-party stakeholders and provide updates on regulatory expectations. Meetings will be convened by the AI Office at least once a year, or more frequently if needed, either on the Office’s initiative or at the request of members.
To ensure public accountability, the AI Office has published a Taskforce Vademecum, including a list of participants, and committed to registering meetings and issuing high-level summaries, subject to commercial confidentiality.
The initiative follows a similar model to the Permanent Taskforce under the Code of Conduct on Disinformation, linked to the Digital Services Act, and signals the EU’s effort to combine voluntary industry cooperation with binding AI regulation.
