A new Deloitte report reveals that over 80% of Indian businesses are exploring the development of autonomous agents, signaling a strong national pivot toward Agentic AI. Released on April 2, the fourth wave of Deloitte’s “State of GenAI” report (India perspective) highlights both the growing enthusiasm and the challenges Indian companies face in deploying generative AI technologies at scale.
Agentic AI—systems that act with limited oversight to achieve specific goals—is gaining traction, with 50%of organizations identifying multi-agent workflows as a key area of focus. This trend reflects a broader surge in interest around automation, with 70% of companies aiming to use GenAI to streamline operations across departments.
The report also finds that GenAI is delivering tangible value. Nearly 70% of surveyed firms said AI integration met or exceeded their return on investment expectations. Over 67% noted that GenAI had improved every phase of the software development lifecycle. Key departments like IT, customer service, marketing, and operations are leading the way in adoption as businesses mature in their AI strategies.
Still, the path to scaled implementation remains uneven. Only 29% of firms reported successfully scaling even 30% of their AI proof-of-concept projects. And while GenAI tools are becoming more accessible, actual usage lags—only 40% of employees with access are actively using them. Concerns over data quality, AI hallucinations, and real-world consequences of errors continue to stall deployment.
Most businesses prefer buying AI tools over developing them in-house, a decision that speeds up adoption but limits customization and long-term adaptability. With 94% of firms saying it would take more than six months to exit a failed AI project, early strategic decisions carry high stakes.
Despite these hurdles, Indian organizations remain optimistic about agentic AI. The majority expect to resolve scaling and adoption challenges within two years, positioning India as a potential global leader in responsible, value-driven AI deployment.
