Governor Tate Reeves has issued Executive Order No. 1584, Mississippi’s first directive aimed at fostering collaboration and advancing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the state. The executive order seeks to prepare Mississippi for AI’s widespread adoption while addressing privacy, security, and ethical concerns.

“AI isn’t going anywhere anytime soon,” Governor Reeves said in a press release. “There are a lot of benefits and risks associated with this technology, and that’s why Mississippi needs to continue preparing for its eventual widespread adoption. This executive order will help to bring together stakeholders, as well as better protect Mississippians’ privacy, security, and rights.”

The executive order assigns the Mississippi Department of Information Technology Services (ITS) the task of conducting a comprehensive inventory of AI technologies currently planned, piloted, or used by state agencies. ITS will also evaluate existing processes, guidelines, and uses of AI within these agencies.

In collaboration with public and private sector stakeholders, ITS will develop recommendations for responsible AI use. These recommendations will include principles, guidelines, and criteria to govern the acquisition, development, and deployment of AI across state agencies.

Dr. Craig P. Orgeron, Executive Director and State Chief Information Officer, highlighted the order’s focus on ethical and secure AI implementation. “By fostering collaboration among state agencies, industry experts, and stakeholders, we are ensuring that AI is implemented ethically, securely, and in a way that builds trust while delivering meaningful improvements for all Mississippians.”

The executive order has garnered support from several state legislators and technology leaders. Representative Jill Ford, Chair of the Mississippi House Technology Committee, emphasized the importance of the directive. “This executive order is a proactive step toward ensuring that Mississippi remains at the forefront of technological innovation while safeguarding the privacy and security of our citizens.”

Senator Bart Williams, Chair of the Mississippi Senate Technology Committee, praised the order as a forward-thinking approach to leveraging AI’s potential. “This executive order positions Mississippi as a leader in AI innovation. By embracing AI, we can attract businesses, enhance state services, and prepare our workforce for future opportunities.”

Executive Order No. 1584 is part of Mississippi’s broader strategy to modernize state government and promote innovation. By establishing a framework for responsible AI use, the state aims to improve public services, attract businesses, and strengthen its workforce.
