A sweeping data privacy bill aimed at giving residents greater control over their personal information has been signed into law in Oklahoma, with new protections set to take effect in 2027.
Senate Bill 546, authored by House Majority Floor Leader Josh West and Sen. Brent Howard, establishes new rights for consumers and sets clear requirements for businesses that collect and process personal data.
Under the law, Oklahomans will be able to access, correct, delete and obtain copies of their personal data. The legislation also allows residents to opt out of the sale of their data and certain targeted advertising practices, reflecting growing concerns over how companies use personal information online.
“In the age of the internet, personal data is valuable currency,” West said in a statement announcing the bill’s passage. “People deserve to know how their data is being used and have the ability to make decisions about that information.”
The law applies to companies operating in Oklahoma that process the personal data of at least 100,000 consumers, or 25,000 consumers if a majority of revenue comes from selling data. Businesses will be required to provide transparent privacy notices, implement reasonable security measures and obtain consent before processing sensitive data. Enforcement authority will fall to the Oklahoma Attorney General.
Howard said the measure addresses long-standing concerns about unchecked data collection by technology companies. He noted the law gives individuals the ability to prevent their personal information—from browsing habits to spending data—from being sold without consent.
The legislation has been years in the making. West first introduced a version of the policy in 2021, following earlier efforts dating back to 2019.
Senate Bill 546 will take effect Jan. 1, 2027, and includes exemptions for certain entities, including state agencies, nonprofits and organizations already regulated under federal laws such as HIPAA.
