OpenAI has launched a new initiative aimed at expanding its reach into the public sector, announcing “OpenAI for Government” earlier this month as a consolidated effort to bring its artificial intelligence tools to federal, state, and local agencies across the United States.
The initiative builds on existing partnerships with organizations such as NASA, the National Institutes of Health, the Treasury Department, and several national laboratories. Under the new banner, OpenAI will offer access to its most advanced models through secure platforms like ChatGPT Enterprise and ChatGPT Gov, along with limited availability of custom models for national security purposes.
One of the first projects under this initiative will be a pilot with the U.S. Department of Defense. Managed by the Department’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office, the pilot carries a contract ceiling of $200 million and will explore how AI can improve administrative processes such as health care delivery, data management, and cybersecurity. OpenAI stated that all government use cases must align with its existing usage policies and ethical guidelines.
While the company frames the move as a way to cut red tape and help civil servants focus on more meaningful work, the expansion also raises important questions about how AI will be integrated into government workflows—and what oversight will accompany it. The company says it will provide “hands-on support” and help agencies anticipate new applications of AI as the technology continues to evolve.
This government-focused push comes as public agencies nationwide experiment with AI tools to manage paperwork, analyze data, and improve efficiency. OpenAI highlighted early results from a pilot in Pennsylvania, where some state employees reported saving nearly two hours per day on routine tasks.
The company emphasized that security, compliance, and transparency will remain central to its work with public institutions.
