Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has formed a high-level steering committee to promote the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) across key sectors, saying the technology will play a central role in strengthening the country’s digital economy and driving sustainable growth, Arab News reported.
During an online meeting in Lahore on Saturday, Sharif said the government was prioritizing information technology and AI to modernize public services, improve efficiency, and enhance transparency. “We want to use artificial intelligence for the development of the national economy,” he said, according to an official statement cited by Arab News.
The new AI Steering Committee will oversee the integration of AI tools and systems nationwide, while a separate panel of experts will be established to advise the government on responsible AI deployment, data protection, and regulatory safeguards. Officials said the national policy on AI will focus on ensuring ethical use and the protection of citizens’ information.
Pakistan has already begun rolling out AI-driven initiatives in the public sector, including an AI-based Customs Clearance and Risk Management System (RMS) designed to streamline tax collection, reduce human intervention, and make customs operations more transparent. The government has also announced plans to introduce digital upgrades at southern ports, using AI to manage congestion, accelerate cargo handling, and increase exports.
Sharif emphasized that artificial intelligence would be instrumental in making the implementation of the country’s digital economy “more effective and transparent.” The creation of the steering committee marks a major step in Pakistan’s strategy to harness emerging technologies for governance, trade, and economic competitiveness, positioning AI as a cornerstone of its national development agenda, according to Arab News.
