South Korea has launched a new National AI Strategy Committee, a central body designed to strengthen governance and accelerate innovation in artificial intelligence. The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that the Cabinet approved regulations for the committee during a meeting chaired by President Lee Jae-Myung at the Yongsan Presidential Office on September 2.

The move fulfills President Lee’s campaign pledge to elevate the former Presidential Committee on AI into a more powerful organization with broader authority. Under a presidential decree, the committee will now serve as Korea’s command center for artificial intelligence, overseeing national strategies, coordinating cross-ministerial initiatives, and assessing the performance of government AI projects.

Officials said the upgraded body will be responsible for defining Korea’s national AI vision, setting medium- and long-term strategies, and implementing policies that aim to secure the country a place among the world’s top three leaders in AI. To bolster its effectiveness, the committee expanded its membership from 45 to 50 commissioners and increased its leadership to three vice chairs, including a full-time representative from the private sector. The Chief Secretary to the President for AI Future Planning will serve as secretary, and 13 ministers from key portfolios such as finance, education, science, defense, industry, and data protection will participate.

To ensure execution at every level of government, the committee will also oversee a Council of Chief AI Officers. The council will include deputy ministers and regional government representatives, with its chairperson appointed directly by the president. This framework is designed to bridge high-level policymaking with on-the-ground implementation, ensuring that Korea’s ambitious AI strategies translate into tangible results nationwide.

By reinforcing leadership and coordination, South Korea is positioning itself to accelerate AI-driven growth and strengthen its global competitiveness in the rapidly evolving field.
