U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo recently announced the appointment of four new members to the National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee (NAIAC), a key body advising the President and the White House on critical matters related to artificial intelligence (AI). These experts will provide guidance on U.S. AI competitiveness, the state of AI science, and workforce issues related to the AI sector.

The NAIAC, established in 2022, was created to ensure that the U.S. maintains global leadership in AI innovation while addressing the potential risks and challenges associated with this rapidly evolving technology. The committee offers advice on the management and coordination of AI initiatives, ensuring that activities are balanced and that funding is appropriately allocated to support the country’s AI priorities.

“Empowering our nation’s top talent in AI across academia, industry, non-profits, and civil society is fundamental to the responsible development and deployment of this generation-defining technology,” said Secretary Raimondo in a statement. “These new committee members represent some of the best in their field, and I am confident they will play an important part in helping NAIAC meet its mission to provide the expertise and guidance necessary to maintain U.S. global leadership on AI.”

The appointment of these four experts comes after the first 27 members were appointed in 2022 following the passage of the National AI Initiative Act of 2020. Members of the NAIAC serve three-year terms, with the possibility of reappointment for a second term at the discretion of the Secretary of Commerce.

The newly appointed members to the NAIAC bring a wealth of experience across a range of sectors:

  • Aneesh Chopra, Chief Strategy Officer of Arcadia and the first U.S. Chief Technology Officer, has a long history in technology policy, having also served as Virginia’s Secretary of Technology.

  • Christopher Howard, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Arizona State University (ASU), is a distinguished graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy and a Rhodes Scholar who earned a doctorate in politics from Oxford University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

  • Angie Cooper, Executive Vice President of Heartland Forward, brings extensive experience in public policy, having worked in domestic and international government affairs for Walmart Stores, Inc., where she most recently served as Senior Director of Global Public Policy.

  • Beth Cobert, former President of the Markle Foundation, has significant leadership experience in government, having served as Acting Director of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and Deputy Director for Management at the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).

These newly appointed members are expected to play a key role in shaping AI policy and ensuring that the U.S. continues to be a leader in AI development while addressing ethical, workforce, and scientific challenges. NAIAC’s work will be supported by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which provides administrative backing to the committee.
