U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo recently announced the appointment of four new members to the National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee (NAIAC), a key body advising the President and the White House on critical matters related to artificial intelligence (AI). These experts will provide guidance on U.S. AI competitiveness, the state of AI science, and workforce issues related to the AI sector.

Strengthening U.S. AI Leadership

Established in 2022, the NAIAC was created to ensure that U.S. AI policies and programs support responsible innovation while addressing emerging risks. The committee advises the federal government on how to manage and coordinate national AI initiatives, helping balance resources and focus areas across research, education, and ethics.

Secretary Raimondo emphasized the importance of collaboration in shaping the nation’s AI future. “Empowering our nation’s top talent in AI across academia, industry, non-profits, and civil society is fundamental to the responsible development and deployment of this generation-defining technology,” she said. “These new committee members represent some of the best in their field, and I am confident they will play an important part in helping NAIAC meet its mission to provide the expertise and guidance necessary to maintain U.S. global leadership on AI.”

New Members Bring Broad Expertise

The four new NAIAC members bring experience from government, academia, and the private sector. They join 27 other experts appointed in 2022 following the National AI Initiative Act of 2020. Members serve three-year terms, with the possibility of reappointment at the Secretary’s discretion.

  • Aneesh Chopra, Chief Strategy Officer of Arcadia and the first U.S. Chief Technology Officer, has a long history in technology policy. He previously served as Virginia’s Secretary of Technology, where he championed digital innovation and data transparency.
  • Christopher Howard, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Arizona State University (ASU), is a Rhodes Scholar and a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy. He holds a doctorate in politics from Oxford University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
  • Angie Cooper, Executive Vice President of Heartland Forward, brings extensive experience in public policy and economic development. Before joining Heartland Forward, she served as Senior Director of Global Public Policy for Walmart, overseeing both domestic and international government affairs.
  • Beth Cobert, former President of the Markle Foundation, has deep expertise in government leadership and workforce policy. She previously served as Acting Director of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and as Deputy Director for Management at the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).

Advisory Committee’s Continuing Role

NAIAC’s mission is to help the United States lead in responsible AI innovation while addressing the ethical, workforce, and scientific challenges that come with rapid technological advancement. The committee’s recommendations guide federal agencies, policymakers, and research institutions in shaping AI strategies that benefit both the economy and society. The committee’s work is supported by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which provides administrative and technical assistance. Together, NAIAC and NIST help ensure that U.S. AI governance remains forward-looking, inclusive, and grounded in trust and accountability.
