Anthropic has announced the creation of its National Security and Public Sector Advisory Council, bringing together a bipartisan group of former lawmakers, defense officials, intelligence leaders, and national security experts to help shape the responsible use of artificial intelligence in government.
The council, unveiled August 27, will advise Anthropic on developing AI applications that strengthen U.S. and allied capabilities in areas such as cybersecurity, intelligence analysis, and scientific research. It will also help the company deepen public-private partnerships and promote standards for responsible AI adoption in national security contexts.
The inaugural members include former Senators Roy Blunt and Jon Tester, as well as senior figures such as Patrick Shanahan, former Acting Secretary of Defense; David S. Cohen, former CIA Deputy Director; Lisa E. Gordon-Hagerty and Jill Hruby, both former leaders of the National Nuclear Security Administration; Dave Luber, former Executive Director of U.S. Cyber Command; and Richard Fontaine, CEO of the Center for a New American Security. Other members bring experience from the Department of Justice, Congress, and top advisory roles in both Republican and Democratic administrations.
Anthropic said additional members will be announced as its government partnerships expand.
The move reflects Anthropic’s growing role in U.S. AI policy and security efforts. Over the past year, the company has introduced a custom set of Claude Gov models for national security customers, launched a $200 million partnership with the Department of Defense, and deployed its Claude AI system to 10,000 scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. It has also worked with the National Nuclear Security Administration on safeguards for AI and offered Claude to all three branches of government for $1.
As competition over AI intensifies globally, Anthropic framed the council as part of its commitment to ensure the U.S. and allied democracies maintain technological leadership. The council will help guide the safe, effective, and ethical deployment of frontier AI in an era of strategic competition.
