The Nordic Council of Ministers has approved 30 million Danish kroner (approximately €4 million) in funding over three years (2025–2027) to establish a Nordic-Baltic AI Center, a cross-sectoral initiative aimed at advancing responsible AI development and innovation across the region.

The center, set to launch formally in fall 2025, is a joint effort by major Nordic organizations: AI Sweden, AI Finland, Digital Dogme (Denmark), IKT Norge (Norway), and Almannarómur (Iceland). It will be coordinated by a secretariat based in Sweden, with staff placed in each participating country. The center’s ambition is to also include the Baltic states—Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania—in the collaboration.

Designed as a strategic hub for governments, companies, and civil society, the center will consolidate expertise and leadership on AI governance and implementation. It aims to accelerate AI adoption across sectors while offering capabilities that support national-level decision-making and ecosystem development. Among its assets, the center will tap into cutting-edge infrastructure such as Finland’s LUMI supercomputer, one of the fastest in Europe.

“The AI center is elementary to reaching our Vision 2030 of becoming the most sustainable and integrated region in the world,” said Karen Ellemann, Secretary-General of the Nordic Council of Ministers. “Cross-border and cross-sector cooperation gives the Nordic region a unique opportunity to lead in responsible AI—enhancing our competitiveness while leveraging our influence within the broader European AI landscape.”

The funding decision was jointly made by three ministerial councils—Cooperation, Digitalization, and Business—representing all Nordic countries and territories, including Åland, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands.

With a clear focus on ethical leadership and collaboration, the Nordic-Baltic AI Center is positioned to become a leading force in Europe’s AI future.
